The Story Behind the Name
Original Cost: $3,444,118
Opened: November, 1981
Olde Sawmill’s name can be traced through the Olde Sawmill neighborhood and Sawmill Road. Prior to Rand McNally, a company that has made maps for public and military use for more than 140 years, there were few, if any, roads that were assigned route numbers. More often than not, they were named after a family, a business, or their original end destination, or known only locally by the name the community had given the road or street. Travelers unfamiliar with the area easily got lost and often required directions from locals. “Sawmill Road” would lead one to believe that a sawmill had at one time been located on that road. In fact, a sawmill was located at the intersection of Sawmill Road and Dublin-Granville Road many years ago. Having to chop and fit the logs for cabins correctly by hand was very difficult to accomplish under good circumstances. The sawmill provided Dublin and the surrounding area with materials to construct homes, businesses, bridges, barns, and many other items. The next time you are passing through that intersection, try to imagine two much smaller dirt roads, with only a few buildings along them, no cars and only horse-drawn wagons and a sawmill providing resources for the community. Olde Sawmill was honored as a Blue Ribbon School in the 1980s by the U.S. Department of Education.
The building is 48,846 square feet in size.
District enrollment when the building opened was 2,682 students.
